Professional Development

The responsibilities of the Professional Development Committee include the complete spectrum from undergraduate education to intern training to postgraduate training to professional competence and to lifelong learning. The Education and Training section is responsible for supporting Council and the Professional Development Committee in their work in quality assuring medical education in Ireland.

Developing and maintaining high standards in education and training is in the interest of patient safety and healthcare. This is particularly important in an environment of rapidly changing scientific knowledge, high patient expectations and increasingly sophisticated health care delivery systems. Good quality patient care requires each registered Medical practitioner to continuously participate in learning activities.

The remit of the Medical Council under Professional Development include the following responsibilities;

  • Setting and monitoring standards in undergraduate, intern and postgraduate medical education in Ireland.
  • Laying the foundation for lifelong learning and the maintenance of professional competence.
  • Framing a process for Quality assurance thereby ensuring that Medical Education and Training in Ireland meets with International standards.
