Intern Policy

Along with the endorsement of the HSE Medical Education Training and Research (METR) policy to establish postgraduate medical education and training Networks, the Medical Council has also approved the establishment of a number of postgraduate training networks that will be responsible for Intern training commencing 1st July 2010. Long term options are currently under review.

The networks, at the discretion of the HSE METR unit, will comprise of:

  • Expertise from basic medical education programmes with responsibility for medical school issues in the affiliated network clinical training sites
  • An Intern Coordinator with dedicated protected time who has responsibility for signing off on the Intern year in the affiliated network clinical training sites in order to satisfy the Council’s criteria for granting a ‘Certificate of Experience’
  • Expertise from postgraduate medical education and training programmes with responsibility for postgraduate issues in the affiliated network clinical training sites

The networks must meet the standards set by the Medical Council and will be subject to associated quality assurance processes. The networks will be managed to an evidence-targeted level of quality by the Medical Council’s authorised postgraduate training body/bodies. Evidence of quality control at the local training sites must integrate patient care and safety issues as measurable outcomes of training appropriate to the (Intern) training experience.
