General Registration

General Registration is the only form of registration available to medical practitioners who do not practise in individually numbered, identifiable training posts and have not completed recognised specialist medical training. Registrants may practise independently without supervision but may not falsely represent themselves as holding specialist registration. (See Document E of the Rules and section 46 of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007.pdf)

Application Process

There are four different levels to the application process for general registration. The levels a medical practitioner is required to complete will depend on whether or not they are exempt from that Level:

  • Level 1 - submission of an application form, fee and required documentation for assessment and verification by the Medical Council. This level applies to all applicants.
  • Level 2 - (PRES) a Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) examination of the candidates factual knowledge in the main clinical disciplines. This level only applies to certain applicants.
  • Level 3 - (PRES) an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) of the applicant's clinical skills. This level only applies to certain applicants.
  • Level 4 - an evaluation of the candidate's postgraduate education, training, qualifications and experience to establish the candidate's appropriateness or otherwise for general registration. This level applies to all applicants. For further information in relation to exemptions from PRES, please click here.

Application Procedure

Medical practitioners applying for general registration for the first time should complete the Generic Application Form.pdf.

Medical practitioners applying for general registration, who currently hold trainee specialist registration should pay an annual retention fee of €490 (if not already paid) and formally request that their name be transferred. This can easily be done by emailing tsd2gd@mcirl.ie and clearly stating:
(a) your name and registration number; and
(b) your date of birth; and
(c) your mother's maiden name; and
(d) requesting that your name be transferred to the General Division on expiry of your current training post.
