Statement on EU Working Time Directive

New work patterns for non-consultant hospital doctors to address the requirements of the European Working Time Directive have now been in effect since the 1st July.  In light of this the President of the Medical Council, Professor Kieran Murphy, is keen to ensure that there is no adverse impact on the education and training of NCHDs:

Professor Murphy said: “As the statutory body charged with setting the standards for postgraduate training, the Council’s belief is that education and training must remain an integral part of the work of a non-consultant hospital doctor.  Any erosion of the education and training of non-consultant hospital doctors will compromise the quality of patient care and ultimately patient safety.”
