Opening of application for recognition of bodies to assist the Medical Council with its duties under Part 11

The Medical Council has opened applications from eligible bodies for recognition for the purpose of assisting Council with its new duties in relation to the maintenance of professional competence.

It is planned that bodies approved under Section 94(1) of the MPA 2007 will assist the Council with the establishment and operation of professional competence schemes. Such schemes will be applicable to registered medical practitioners in respect of their duty under Part 11 to maintain their professional competence.

The application process for recognition of bodies is open from 15 November 2010 to 17 December 2010.

Application forms can be requested by eligible bodies from the Professional Competence Section of the Medical Council by emailing pc@mcirl.ie or phoning 01 498 3136.

In order to complete the statutory procedures necessary for the body to assist Council from the 1st of May 2011, an application must be submitted to Council no later than close of business on 17 December 2010.

Council is also currently receiving comment on the draft rules for the better operation of Part 11, specifically including the operation of Section 94(1)in line with its duty under Section 10 of that Act and after consideration of comments, and with the necessary consent of the Minister for Health and Children and the Minister for Finance, it will make the rules.

Formal notice of recognition and making of agreement will only proceed once these rules have been made with necessary Ministerial consent.
