Medical Council Publishes 2011 Business Plan

Significant advances to be made in the regulation of the medical profession

2011 is going to see significant advances in the regulation of the medical profession according to Medical Council President Professor Kieran C. Murphy. Professor Murphy was commenting on the publication today of the Medical Council's 2011 Business Plan. The plan can be read at

Professor Murphy said that: "The Medical Council's focus on protecting the public by promoting and ensuring the highest professional standards amongst doctors is at the core of its work. This Business Plan sets out a very clear pathway for the Council's activities in 2011 to ensure we achieve our strategic objectives and meet the requirements of the Medical Practitioners Act 2007. Publication of this Plan fulfils a core value of the Medical Council to be open and transparent in our processes and actions and demonstrates that we are a modern, progressive and fit-for-purpose organisation.

Ms Caroline Spillane, CEO of the Medical Council said: "2011 is going to be a very busy year for the Medical Council with, in particular, the introduction of Professional Competence schemes. The Council also plans to accredit a number of new training programmes, publish standards for medical education and training, launch an online system for registration and ensure that it continues to communicate effectively with the medical profession and with the general public".

The plan has been submitted to the Department of Health and Children and the Council will enter a dialogue with the Department to ensure its delivery. Council will maximise the use of resources, provide the best value for money and work with the relevant statutory bodies to reduce duplication. In developing this Plan, the context of the current economic environment and its challenges has been taken into account".
