Defining Competencies across the Professional Development Spectrum

Implications for Curricula, Assessment, Faculty and Patients

The Medical Council Education and Training Symposium was held in August and involved leaders of medical schools and postgraduate medical training bodies; patient advocates, senior health officials and members of the Health Service Executive.

As previously mentioned in this newsletter, the keynote speaker was Dr Eric Holmboe, Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the ABIM Foundation.  A report has now been compiled to capture the discussion which followed on associated issues in a workshop format, which included:

•Developing Student and Trainee Professionalism

•Faculty Development and a competency-based approach

•Curricula – including the hidden curriculum and the environment

•Assessing Competence across the professional development spectrum

•Involving patients and other stakeholders

•Competence and continuing practice
