HSE, Forum of Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies and Medical Council to host Careers Day for Medical Interns and Students

A free careers advice day for medical interns and students will be held in The Print Works, Dublin Castle on Saturday 20th September. The event is a joint initiative between the HSE, Forum of Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies and the Medical Council.

Professor Eilis McGovern from the HSE explains: “The “Building your Future” event has been designed to highlight the range of excellent training and career opportunities open to medical graduates in Ireland. We know that a lack of information around career and training options can be a contributory factor in a doctor’s decision to work abroad, so this event will provide comprehensive information on the range of career choices open to graduates.”

The Medical Careers Day will have a full programme of career advice and guidance with information on postgraduate training, the importance of the learning environment for a trainee doctor and information on the next steps for pursuing a successful medical career.

Professor Freddie Wood from the Medical Council said: “Standards of medical education in Ireland are continually improving, and this event provides trainees with a great opportunity to see the options open to them and the rigour that goes into making sure Irish standards are in line with the best internationally. We are currently analysing the results of our first ever survey of all trainees in Ireland, and will be responding to trainees’ views as to how we can improve the learning environment at the start of their careers.”

Sessions will be provided by the postgraduate training bodies on working and training in:

  • Anaesthesia
  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Practice
  • Medicine
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology
  • Occupational Medicine
  • Ophthalmology
  • Paediatrics
  • Pathology
  • Psychiatry
  • Public Health
  • Radiology
  • Surgery

Professor John Crowe, from the Forum of Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies details: “All the postgraduate medical training bodies will be represented at the Medical Careers Day giving attendees the opportunity to learn about training in Ireland. Valuable information on how to apply for training programmes as well as the opportunity to speak with senior trainees to find out what life is like working in the different specialties will be provided on the day. The Forum of Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Bodies believes that Ireland provides top-class medical training and we welcome the opportunity to discuss these opportunities with doctors at the beginning of their career.”
