Doctors Encouraged to Have Their Say

Wednesday, 28th February 2018: Nominations have close today for doctors wishing to contest the Medical Council elections for the term June 2018 to May 2023.

The Medical Council, which is the regulatory body for doctors, has a statutory role in protecting the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst doctors practicing in the Republic of Ireland. The Council has a majority of non-medical members. The 25 member Council consists of 13 non-medical members and 12 medical members.

Six members of the Council are elected by registered medical practitioners, six are appointed by the Minister for Health, one being nominated by the Minister for Education and the remaining 13 are appointed by a number of nominating bodies.

The six medical members who are elected, must be nominated by 10 registered medical practitioners practicing medicine in the State, to validly stand for election. Only registered practitioners, on the register of medical practitioners, may stand for election to the Medical Council.

Following the close of the extended nominations period at 1pm today, Wednesday, 28th February for the category of Specialist Division - Pathology or Radiology, the independent returning officer, Mr Fergus Gallagher, Dublin County Sheriff, has announced the candidate for election to the Medical Council in the category of Specialist Division - Pathology or Radiology having deemed the nomination of the following candidate valid.

Specialist Division - Pathology or Radiology
Dr Thomas Crotty (Registration Number: 009645)

Since no other candidate has been nominated in this category, the returning officer has deemed Dr Crotty elected to the Medical Council, subject to apppointment by the Minister for Health.
The full list of candidates nominated for election in the other categories is available on the medical council website.

All doctors registered as at the 15th February 2018, are eligible to vote on the Medical Council website when voting opens between March 1st and midday on March 21st, and doctors are being encouraged to make sure they have their say by voting.
