Good Professional Practice
We have also defined and promoted areas of good professional practice which have been embedded within medical education and training, and professional development as a whole. The Eight Domains of Good Professional Practice describe the knowledge skills, attitude and behaviour that you must develop and demonstrate throughout your medical career. The domains are as follows –
- Patient Safety and Quality of Patient Care
- Relating to Patients
- Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Collaboration and Teamwork
- Management (including self-management)
- Clinical Skills
Professionalism is a central part of being a doctor. Academic and clinical ability must be under pinned by professional attitudes and behaviour appropriate for doctors. Our role is to define and promote professionalism. At undergraduate level we have done this in our guidelines.
Medical schools have policies and structures in place to support you in developing your professionalism. Ultimately it is your responsibility to demonstrate high professional standards and behaviour.
