Doctors are now invited to renew their registration with the Medical Council

Annual Retention for 31,897 doctors on the Medical Council Register has now opened and will close on 30th June 2025

The Medical Council has today announced that annual retention is now open to all doctors who wish to retain their place on the Medical Council Register. It is a legal requirement for doctors to be registered with the Medical Council if they are practising medicine in Ireland. The deadline for completion of the Annual Retention Application Form (ARAF) is 30th June 2025.
The steps for doctors to renew their registration are:
- Complete the Annual Retention Application Form through the Doctors Portal on the Medical Council website.
- Pay the annual registration fee.
- Provide evidence of professional indemnity, where required.
Failure to complete this process will result in the doctor’s name being removed from the Medical Council Register. Doctors who do not complete annual retention and provide proof of professional indemnity where required cannot legally continue to practise medicine in Ireland.
Paul Byrne, Executive Director, Regulatory Operations and Support Services at the Medical Council encouraged doctors to renew their registration as soon as possible: “Renewing your registration isn’t just an administrative task, it’s what allows you to practise medicine. Every doctor currently on our register has been contacted directly with the steps required. To avoid delays or disruptions to your ability to work, we’re asking all doctors to complete their annual retention as soon as possible.”

Dr Suzanne Crowe, President of the Medical Council explained the importance of completing the ARAF; “Renewing your registration is more than an annual legal requirement. By completing the ARAF, doctors provide valuable data on the state of the medical workforce in Ireland.
“The data and insights submitted by doctors as part of this process are integral to annual workforce reporting and workforce planning. It helps the Medical Council and its stakeholders to identify gaps in the health system, track important trends, and understand doctor migration on and off the Medical Council Register”, Dr Crowe said.
