Medical Council seeks expressions of interest for Committee Membership - Applications now open
Wednesday 8th April 2026: The Medical Council is currently seeking expressions of interest from relevant parties to serve on a number of committees.
The Medical Council, which is the regulatory body for doctors, has a statutory role in protecting the public by promoting the highest professional standards amongst doctors practising in Ireland. To support the Council in delivering its significant role and remit, the Council has a governance structure, supported by committees who focus on particular aspects of the Medical Council’s work.
The six committees that the Medical Council is recruiting for are as follows:
- Audit & Risk Committee (ARC)
- Education & Training Committee (ETC)
- Fitness to Practise Committee (FTPC)
- Health Committee (HC)
- Preliminary Proceedings Committee (PPC)
- Registration & Continuing Practice Committee (RCPC)
Speaking today, Dr Maria O’Kane, Medical Council CEO, said “The Medical Council's Committees are central to our work as a regulator – spanning fitness to practise, education, registration, audit and health. Serving on a Committee is a meaningful opportunity to contribute directly to the protection of patients and to the integrity of medical regulation in Ireland. We are looking for individuals who bring diverse perspectives, professional experience, and a genuine commitment to patient safety.

Applications for each Committee will close on 23rd April 2026. Interested parties can find more information on role requirements and specifications on the Medical Council website.
The Medical Council is made up of 25 members, six of whom are elected positions, five appointed by the Minister for Health through the public appointments service, one nominated by the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, two nominated by the HSE, two by the Medical Schools Council and one nominated by each of the following: HIQA, NMBI, CORU, ICGP, RCSI, RCPI, College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, Private Hospitals Association and the Royal Irish Academy.
