Annual Reports

The Annual Report and Financial Statements highlight the Council's annual activities and key developments for the year.

The Medical Council is responsible for the regulation of the medical profession in Ireland. This includes the regulation of Registration, Undergraduate, Intern and Specialist Education & Training, Professional Competence, Complaints & Investigations, Fitness to Practise. We also produce professional guidance including the Guide to Professional Conduct and Ethics for Registered Medical Practitioners, as well as reports relating to the medical workforce. Taking these reports and data from other sources into account, the Council is concerned about doctor burnout and retention, and the implications this has for patient and professional safety.

The year 2023 saw progress in several areas, including preparing for upcoming legislation, the establishment of a new Liaison Service and Medical Council Contact Centre, and publication of new guidance for doctors.

We are fortunate to have a highly skilled medical workforce in Ireland, which we must do all in our power to sustain. By using data, knowledge, and resources to focus our efforts and produce tangible actions, this will support our aim to protect the public and continuously improve our interactions with doctors.
