Climate Action and Sustainability

The Medical Council are committed to developing and implementing a Climate Action strategy that will support the Medical Council in becoming an environmentally conscious and sustainable organisation.

Our Climate Action Roadmap demonstrates the Medical Council’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, reducing our carbon emissions, and to ensure that as a Public Body we lead by example through our climate action activities.

Climate Action Roadmap

The Government’s Climate Action Mandate sets out objectives for public bodies, including improvement in energy efficiency by 50% and the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 51% by 2030.

In developing this Roadmap, the Medical Council has identified its baseline against which we will measure progress towards the Mandate’s targets. This baseline along with the Medical Council’s progress towards our climate action objectives to date, has been used to calculate our ‘gap to target’ and to identify opportunities for further action.

Following publication in April of CAP25, the Medical Council’s EPO has commenced a review of new requirements which will be incorporated into an updated Roadmap.

Climate Action Mandate

The Medical Council’s EPO and Climate Action & Sustainability Champion continue to report against the Public Sector Climate Action Mandate.

12 additional requirements were incorporated for reporting against the 2024 period including for waste, water, events/conference catering and procurement.

Climate action and sustainability considerations in our strategies and business planning processes will help us to deliver on our Climate Action agenda to 2030 and on to 2050.

Accessing the Medical Council Offices

The Medical Council encourages all staff and visitors travelling to Kingram House to consider sustainable modes of transportation. See the interactive map in our Contact us section of our website for more information on location and public transport options.

Bicycle parking is available on a first come first served basis at our offices.

Our office is well served by public transport. Nearby methods of public/ sustainable transportation include:

• Pearse DART station
• Bus, Luas, Train, Cycling, Walking routes – see Plan A Journey | Transport for Ireland
• EV Charging – see Charge Map
• Wilton Terrace, Fitzwilliam Square East, Fitzwilliam Square West Dublin Bikes stations
• Charlemont, Harcourt or Stephen’s Green Luas stops

Smarter Travel Mark

With a view to achieving the National Transport Authority’s Smarter Travel Mark, we are building on existing measures to further facilitate, support and encourage sustainable travel options for our employees and visitors.

In Q1 2025, of our staff surveyed:

• 70% use public transport, walk or cycle to work
• 26% travel to the office by car, motorbike/ scooter
• 4% travel via taxi/ other mode of transportation

The Medical Council will work to increase our use of sustainable travel methods through promotion of sustainable travel options, provision of secure and accessible bicycle parking and by encouraging active mobility, health and wellbeing activities.
