NUIG

Entry Requirements for 5 and 6 year undergraduate medical programmes

RCSI - Direct Entry

There are a number of entry requirements you need to meet to be considered eligible for the Undergraduate Medicine programme, but first you need to confirm your status as an Irish/EU applicant or a Non-EU applicant.

To be considered an EU applicant, you must:

  • Have been living in an EU Member State (which includes the EEA and Switzerland) for at least three of the last five years before starting the course. Members of the EEA include Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
  • Meet the EU Nationality Test as outlined in more detail in here.
  • Meet a number of other terms and conditions that need to be met regarding residency, income tax etc. Please review this information carefully as a general guide regarding your eligibility for EU applicant status.

If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for EU applicant status, you will be deemed a Non-EU student for fees and application purposes.

Irish and EU applicants - School Leaver

To be eligible for consideration for an Irish or EU School Leaver place, you must:

  • Meet the minimum entry (matriculation) and specific subject requirements.
  • Achieve a minimum of 480 points in the same sitting of the Irish Leaving Certificate examination or equivalent.
  • Sit the HPAT-Ireland test in the year of admission to the programme.

Five-year entry route (exempt from Foundation Year)
Applicants must present a minimum of six subjects [2 x H4 and 4 x O6/H7] in the Irish Leaving Certificate to include a minimum of an O6/H7 in Irish (unless exempt), English, Mathematics and a third language plus a minimum of a H4 in Chemistry and a H4 in either Physics or Biology.
Applicants must meet the above subject requirements and a minimum of 480 points in the same sitting of the Irish Leaving Certificate examination.

Six-year entry route

To be eligible for consideration for an EU GEM place, you must:

  • Apply to the CAO by 1 February in the year of admission to the programme.
  • Hold or expect to hold – by July prior to entry – a competitive GPA or a minimum of an upper second class honours from an accredited undergraduate bachelor degree (equivalent to NFQ Level 8). The degree can be in any discipline.
  • Compete on the basis of your Graduate Australian Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT) scores only. As a guide, the minimum GAMSAT on which students were admitted to RCSI in 2019 was 59*. The GAMSAT-Ireland test is held in March and September each year (date of next examination: 21 March 2020). Registration is by online enrolment and opens in early November preceding the test. Please consult the GAMSAT website for further information.

  • GAMSAT results are valid for two years prior to the start of the programme you are applying for. If you are presenting GAMSAT UK or GAMSAT Australia results you must provide these to the CAO when submitting your application.

If you do not have a qualification in physics you must present mathematics at O3/H6 or better

UCD - Graduate Entry

Minimum grade of second-class honours, grade 1 (2.1) in first Honours Bachelor’s degree (NFQ Level 8). The degree can be in any discipline.
