Statement of Commitment

The Medical Council is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with European Union (Accessibility of Websites and Mobile Applications of Public Sector Bodies) Regulations 2020. This accessibility statement applies to content published on www.medicalcouncil.ie.

Compliance Status

The Medical Council website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 level AA. The Medical Council has been working with the National Disability Authority (NDA) to improve website accessibility as part of a review process since May 2022. Review of our website, which is ongoing, has identified some accessibility issues including non-compliances and exemptions which we are working to rectify.

Examples of Non-Accessible Content

Some parts of this website are not fully accessible however we are working hard to make improvements in this area, for example*:

• Some pages have links to websites or software that we do not own or manage and so cannot guarantee their accessibility.
• Some tables and content on this website do not have correctly defined headers. This makes it harder for people using screen readers or voice recognition software to read the content on the site. We are currently working on a website redevelopment project to address this issue, which commenced in 2023.
• Not all images on this website have photo (or meta) descriptions. If images do not have the correct descriptions, then a user using assistive technologies will not learn the information conveyed in the image. We are continuing to review existing images to update descriptions and improve accessibility and ensure photo descriptions for all new images to the website.
• Many documents are published as PDFs – which are less accessible than HTML pages for people using assistive technologies. We are working internally to encourage publishing HTML pages instead of less accessible formats like PDF where possible.
• Colour contrast may not always be sufficient on some pages. We implemented a website redesign project in 2024 and have made vast improvements in this area and will continue to make updates to improve colour contrast as part of our website redevelopment project.

Exempt Content

Content published in some formats (e.g. PDF documents) prior to 23 September 2018 is exempt under the EU Web Accessibility Directive. Video or audio content published before 23 September 2020 are also exempt under the EU Web Accessibility Directive.

How we are going to improve accessibility on the Medical Council website

The Medical Council recognise the non-accessible elements of our website will present challenges for some users and we are committed to making significant changes and upgrades as part of a website redevelopment project that commenced in 2023 and is currently ongoing.
The Medical Council has been working with the National Disability Authority to improve website accessibility as part of a review process since May 2022. Review of our website, which is ongoing, has identified some accessibility issues which we are working hard to rectify.
Various departments within the Medical Council are also working to update content which fails to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.1 AA standard.

Escalation of a Complaint – Enforcement Procedure

If you have made a complaint with regards to accessibility and are not happy with the Medical Council’s response, you can make a complaint to the Ombudsman under the Disability Act.
