Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES)
Doctors intending to pursue registration in the general or trainee specialist division may be required to sit the Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES). It is comprised of two elements – the PRES Level 2 and the PRES Level 3. The PRES examinations are primarily a test of knowledge and clinical skills in the main clinical disciplines of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Surgery, and Medicine/General Practice.
The PRES examinations are based on the Eight Domains of Good Professional Practice as devised by Medical Council.
All applicants through the PRES Route must make an application online and submit the required documents for assessment in order to determine their eligibility for the PRES Level 2 or Level 3 exam.
PRES Level 2 is an assessment of doctor's clinical knowledge.
PRES Level 3 is an assessment of doctor's clinical skills.
PRES Alternative Exam
You can be exempted from the PRES if you have passed the UK General Medical Council’s Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) Part 2.
IMPORTANT – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Candidates seeking to sit the PLAB must meet with all of the GMC’s eligibility and language requirements, which differ from those of the Medical Council of Ireland.
Please note that you must pass PLAB 1 before you are permitted to sit PLAB 2.

Important: There is no reciprocal arrangement with the GMC to recognise the PRES exams. The GMC does not recognise either PRES 2 or PRES 3 for the purpose of registration.
